Lab 1 1. The theory of ‘undesign’ is that things should look in the way they work. The design should not fool the user. This means there should not be any unnecessary design elements. The design should be clean and simple. This translates to the Ives design where from the imac to the ipod the design is clean. The device is intuitive and allows users to easily use it. Lab 2 1. The one lap top per child product is the most interesting for me as I think there is great potential. This product would be offered to the governments of South American countries to learn on a lap top. The lap top would give the children the opportunity to master a technology and skill that is very necessary in today’s age. Moreover, the internet and computers are a source of endless information. These children would have the opportunity to not only learn how to use a technology, but also learn to educate themselves. They would be able to read, watch video and educate themselves on a variety of topics.
2. I would be interested into further researching how the Indian government is attempting to re-engineer the iPad for their students to make a copy for 35 dollars. If successful this could help other developing countries mend the digital divide. If a 35 dollar iPad was available for countries like Brazil this would allow them to enrich their education for their students. Lab 3 1. Jan Chipchase job at Nokia allowed him to learn about the mobile landscape. Chipchase understood that there was a vast number of mobile users across different climates, culture and lifestyles. His job was to understand the mobile client, and how Nokia must provide to all their clients. He spent a vast amount of time doing ground work, understanding how people communicate.
The Nokia job is different than the Frog job as Nokia enabled Chipchase to understand the landscape moving quickly through different countries and cultures. At Frog Chipchase looks more deeply in to research such as mobile commerce in more specific issues, and research solutions. At Frog he has a higher position of authority, where he is researching more than reporting.
Jan Chipchase is called human-behavior researcher and also a user anthropologist. This refers to his work of studying human behavior in the mobile landscape. 2. Digital Divide- The use of a cellphone is necessary in order to participate in global business. Owning and using a cellphone allows users to reach suppliers and other clients.
Just-in-time- This allows the user to have instant gratification from the cellphone. It allows instant transfer of information which gives instant sense of gratification
Productivity- The ability to quickly call someone, while they are out of office, or mobile allows an increase of productivity. The user is able to run errands and not wait by a landline, and the client is able to contact the user at anytime.
Mobile bank account- with the advent of mobile commerce it will allow users to make secure micropayments quickly and safely Lab 4
Extraction- This is where the materials are exploited from the earth. This is when the resources such as metals are blown out of the earth. This process is typically not clean, and has long term effects for the area.
Production- This is where energy to mix topic chemcicals in with the natural resources to make products. This produces to toxic contaminated products. This usually happens in third world or poor countries leaving citizens with contaminated land and air for products that they will not even enjoy.
Distribution- The sale of the products is in the phase. The number one priority is to ensure that the products are delievered for as cheap as possible. If that means flying parts across the world to be build and flown back it will be done. The environmental cost is not part of the calculation,.
Consumption- This is where north America comes in. We are the consumers and this is where consuming goods and shopping is necessary in order to keep this broken system a float.
Disposal- The goods are now consumed and thrown away quickly. It goes to landfills or exported out of the area. The toxin then are buried into the earth again. North Americans are told that the good is not as good, cool or socially acceptable anymore and the need something new.
Another Way- Green Chemistry and Zero waste are how this broken system can be fixed. North American need to stop transferring the cost of these cheap good to the earth and developing nations.
